The Rocky Mountains are home to some of the best singletrack trails on the planet. Not only that but one area in the Rockies holds several jewels in the crown of mountain biking destinations. Each location has its own page in the history of the sport and all are only a few hours drive from the last. The Cream takes you from one legendary Colorado location to the next and since we're in the area we'll even venture into Utah and visit the mountain bike mecca, Moab!
The Locations
Breckenridge: In the winter Breckenridge is the most popular US ski resort for British tourists but in the summer it becomes Colorado's capital of outdoor sports. It keeps the lively, colourful atmosphere of the ski season and welcomes visitors with enthusiasm. There are so many restaurants, bars, shops and outdoor activities for your entertainment that you're sure to want to come back again. But we'll be there for the riding and that certainly lives up to expectation. The trails are pure woodland roller coasters. The terrain is so varied within the forests it's hard to believe that you're still in the same area. Roots, rocks, hardpack, stream crossings, switchbacks, with natural drops, jumps and berms result in one fantastic ride after another.
Fruita: Fruita is a small town on the Colorado Utah border, lying in between the Book Cliffs to the North, the Colorado River to the South, the Utah dessert to the West and the Rockies looming to the East. This area is a real mix of canyon land rocks and smooth hardpack singletrack. Often referred to as the next Moab this small town has an impressive array of trails; hand crafted and loved by the friendly locals. The relaxed atmosphere at night is awoken each summer day by excited riders from all over the US, eager to hit the trails.
Moab: Moab hardly needs any introduction. Home to the Arches National Park, the SlickRock trail, Porcupine Rim, Castle Valley and the gate way to the Colorado River’s sandstone canyons there is something here for everyone. But you’ll be going for the mountain biking and Moab never fails to live up to the hype. You really will never have experienced riding like it before. The grip on the bare sandstone is breathtaking with fierce and fast trails that have evolved from their roots as Jeep and trials bike trails to full blown mountain bike legends. The trails are only part of this mountain biker’s paradise; the town’s atmosphere, shops, locals and restaurants are all geared up to provide a great time day and night and are the perfect ending to your holiday.
Durango: Every mountain biker familiar with the world of racing will have heard of Durango. Many of the USA’s professionals either come from here or have relocated here for the the simple reason that the lively town lies at the foot of the San Juan Mountain range. These beautiful rugged peaks watch over the lush pine forests which harbour miles and miles of pristine natural singletrack. World Cups, World Champs and NORBA’s are regularly held here, not to mention all the other local events and races aimed at providing mountain bikers an unforgettable visit. Countless bars shops and restaurants mean you’ll never get bored in Durango.
Crested Butte:
Crested Butte lies in the heart of the Colorado Rockies and sits at the end of a dead end highway into the mountains. This isolated paradise has seen the rise of mountain biking from its very roots. The Pearl Pass Classic remains to this day as a celebratory ride to honour the lads who took the first ‘clunkers’ over the 12000ft. pass to Aspen, heralding the arrival of mountain biking and has grown into a whole week’s worth of celebrations at the annual mountain bike festival. These days, the town does more trade in the summer from cyclists then it does in winter from skiers and snowboarders! All summer long the town revolves around cyclists and has a really relaxed, homely feel, welcoming all to share in the atmosphere and ride the superb woodland singletrack that litters all the valleys and peaks around.
The Holiday
Your adventure will begin in Denver, Colorado where RTW staff will meet and greet you and transfer you to your first fantastic riding spot, Breckenridge. The trails around Breck' are extensive and pure woodland singletrack of the highest grade. This lively town is a great place to get used to mountain life and soak up the atmosphere which is so welcoming of outdoor sports enthusiasts.
From Breckenridge we venture on to the up and coming mtb resort of Fruita. The size of the town belies the number of fantastic trails hidden round these parts and we are only too happy to show you a selection of all the best bits. Since we are so close to Utah at this point in the trip we've added in the extra treat of Moab. This is a true mountain bike mecca and during the summer months is overrun with like minded enthusiasts keen to sample the unique sandstone trails. This destination will test your skills to the limit as we ride the world famous Slickrock Trail and the technically demanding but immensely thrilling Porcupine Rim Trail.
From the Utah desert we head back into the mountains and the cycling capital of Colorado; Durango. Pro riders live here, cycling festivals are held here and the racing calendar is never ending - and for good reason! Durango is situated just south of the San Juan Mountain range and holds miles upon miles of back country singletrack that never has a dull moment. The rides round here are tough but so rewarding you'll never want to leave!
Your final destination is Crested Butte, slap bang in the centre of the Colorado Rockies. This friendly mountain town lives for mountain biking. The locals cruise the streets on bikes rather than cars, the talk in the bars is of the beautiful trails and the talk on the trails is one of excitement and amazement at the quality of the networks which weave their way through thick pine forests and across lush mountain meadows.
